WAFA – Wilderness Advance First Aid

IMF DELHI || November 23rd-26th , 2023

“You can be a hero by learning and providing first aid when the time comes”.

This course is a 4 days crash course for first aid training in the wilderness or back country situations. The designated duration for this course is 4 days ( WAFA 28 hrs + CPR 4 hrs = 32 hrs). That is at the end of the course we received 3 certifications , first for Wilderness Advance First Aid; second for Adult and child CPR; and third for Automatic Epinephrine Injector. The validity of the course is for 2 years after which renewal of the certificate is required. This course is organised / conducted by Hanifl Center which is based in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. Hanifl Centre has collaborated with Aerie Backcountry Medicine, USA to teach Wilderness Medicine and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation courses in India. These courses provide qualifying participants with an internationally accredited certificate of WFA / WAFA / WFR with Adult & Child CPR. Hanifl Centre of Woodstock School, Mussoorie has collaborated with Aerie Backcountry Medicine (ABM), Montana, U.S.A. to teach these courses in India.
During these 4 days we were taught about different steps that we need to take when we come across a situation wherein we encounter a patient with injuries, be it because of accident or occurring naturally (natural disasters) .

The course focuses on full Patient Assessment & Extended Care; Injury-Illness Identification & Management including: Bleeding Control, Shock, Spinal Injuries, Head Injuries, Chest Wounds, Sprains & Strains, Fractures & Dislocations, Splinting, Cold Injuries, Heat Illnesses, Lightning, Altitude Illnesses, Drowning, Allergies & Anaphylaxis, Bites & Stings, Medical Illnesses, Wounds & Wound Management, Patient moves & Litter carries, Asthma, Diabetes, Abdominal Emergencies, Burns, Environmental Emergencies; Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) including MI, Angina & Stroke; Emergency Response Procedures etc.
Through the duration of these 4 days the course enables you to asses and then act accordingly in an emergency situation . The team conduct the learning by practical and theory teaching skills. We have a demonstration before the very new situation that we will be learning in the theory class after it, and these demonstrations were done by the attendees only.

I feel that the course should be undertaken by each and every citizen, as it is very crucial and basic knowledge that should be attained by all . All I would say after this is , “cotton and savlon are the two components which aren’t supposed to be in our first aid kits”. I think this is enough for us to realise that we actually need to know the basic knowledge of it all.
